Employee Spotlight: Getting to Know Alex Livadas

“Most of you know my passion for running. I had the good fortune of running the Boston Marathon 39 years ago and recently had the idea of how great it would be to be able to qualify so that I can run it again on my 40th anniversary of running the Boston Marathon in 1978. So, I recruited my partner in crime–my 25-year-old daughter, Athena, to help me run the qualifying race together.

We decided that it should be a flat course with mild temperatures, so after searching high and low, we came up with a small qualifying race, the Santa Clarita Marathon that took place on November 5, 2017 in Santa Clarita, CA. Located 35 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, it occupies most of the Santa Clarita Valley at an altitude of 1,200 feet. Our intense marathon training started four months ago at Newport Beach for me and at NYC for Athena, who lives and works there. It consisted of running an average of six miles per day, except on Sundays when we did our long training, increasing by three miles every subsequent week starting at 10 miles and reaching 22 miles, four weeks before the race and then back to 10 miles the week before.

With one day off per week, we were very lucky to be injury-free and have great 65 degree weather; although, we did have to face a high humidity of 80%. My race went off without a hitch and I was able to pace with the 4-hour group until mile 22 where I slowed down a bit and finished at 4:03:50, over six minutes under the Boston qualifying time of 4:10:00 for my age group. I was so happy that I was able to do it on my first try and did not have to mount a new effort to run another qualifying race. Of course, my 4:03:50 time pales by comparison with the 2:57:21 that I ran the last time I ran Boston. But after all it was almost 40 years ago…”
