What is the Meaning Behind the Mercedes-Benz Logo?

First, let’s take a look at some backstory. Mercedes-Benz was founded almost a century ago by Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. Benz and Daimler shared an interest in mechanics and engineered; Benz built his first motorized tricycle in 1886, while Daimler created a horseless carriage a few years later.

Not long after, Daimler established DMG and Benz established Benz & Cie. In 1900, the “Mercedes” car was developed by DMG. However, war broke out in Germany, making it almost impossible for drivers to afford fuel. So, in 1926, DMG and Benz & Cie. merged into Daimler-Benz.

The merger proved lucrative. In 1927, around 7,000 Mercedes-Benz cars were produced. Three years later, the Mercedes-Benz W15 emerged on the market and quickly became one of the most sought-after cars. Its success was a strong supporting factor in the creation of the Daimler-Benz AG division.

About the Three-Pointed Star

Over the years, the Mercedes-Benz logo underwent many changes. The initial idea came from Paul and Adolf Daimler—sons of Gottlieb Daimler. Their father used a similar symbol to mark the family postcards. In turn, the brand’s symbol started out as a gold star, then eventually became a white star at the center of a thick circular border with detailing around the edges.

Today, the automaker is represented by a silver logo: a circle with a three-pointed star in the center. The design represents the strength and prevalence of Daimler engines on land, sea, and in the air. On today’s Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the Three-Pointed Star is displayed as either a stand-up hood ornament or a stamp embedded in the grille.
