Don’t Forget your Sunscreen!
What is National Trails Day?
National Trails Day was set in place by the American Hiking Association as a day to raise awareness and celebrate over 200,000 well maintained trails in America. Trails offer people a way to escape into Mother Nature, be surrounded by beautiful scenery, experience wildlife in its natural habitat, breathe in fresh air, and support an active lifestyle. National Trails Day brings beginner and expert hikers, bikers, horseback riders, walkers, joggers, rock climbers, and other outdoorsy people together.
How to Get Involved:
Today is a day to take advantage of fun activities and events that are being held near you. It is also a day to volunteer to help conserve these magnificent destinations. Trails need maintenance and this is a great way to show your appreciation! To get involved with local volunteer events, visit sites like AmericanHiking.org, REI.com, and nationalforests.org. The American Hiking Association sponsors activities all across the US and can set you up in hosting your own activity by clicking through the link above to visit their site. If you see a volunteer around, show them some appreciation, its hard work to keep these trails safe for everyone!
For Hikers, Bikers, and Horseback Riders:
The Back Bay serves countless purposes, one being home to a wide variety of plants, birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and marine life, many of them listed as endangered. It is also home to a 10.5 mile loop that allows bikers, hikers, walkers, joggers, and horseback riders to share the trail. People love this trail for its beautiful scenery and because it is basically non-stop, no traffic to wait for or worry about. If you are a cyclist you will want to start at Jamboree road and do a counter clockwise loop. Keeping an average 14 mph speed the full lap will take about 1.5 hours. If you are interested in doing the loop on a horse, there are a few different companies to book through, unless you own your own horse, of course! Bring your camera and a friend, you will get a lot of talking done and snap some great shots of our local beauty.
For Anyone Wanting to Make Friends:
Ever heard of Meetup.com? This is a great way to do your favorite things with new groups of people that share similar interests. There is virtually every activity or hobby that you might want to get involved with, and one for every type of person. Are you a hiker? There is a group for that! But it doesn’t stop there, you have options to join in on a variety of skill levels or themes like Lazy Hikers, Single hikers, or Senior Hikers. Just search any activity you want to join and there is a group for it, and if not, you can create your own. It’s easy, fun, and a great way to do things you want to do with people who also want to do it. Or you can attempt something new. Try it out, it’s free and you can join today.
However you partake in this active day, we want to see. Feel free to tag us in your photos.
