The Fletcher Jones Story

Our New Mercedes-Benz and Pre-Owned Dealership in Newport Beach Represents Just One Chapter

To fully understand the spirit and soul behind the success and acclaimed reputation of Fletcher Jones Motorcars, you really need to understand the Fletcher Jones' family legacy, which is carried on today by Fletcher Jones Jr., known among friends as "Ted".

Ted currently presides over one of the most successful luxury automobile dealer groups in the United States and has been credited with pioneering a revolutionary approach in which "guests" not "customers" are treated with the same level of service given at a five-star hotel. To put exactly how well-received this approach has been: The Fletcher Jones' automotive empire now spans four states and nineteen dealerships. The flagship is none other than yours truly, Fletcher Jones Motorcars.

Offering an immaculate collection of new Mercedes-Benz, Platinum pre-owned vehicles, car service, and auto body repair in Newport Beach; we have many claims to fame, including the largest Mercedes-Benz certified collision center in the U.S..

The root of this inspiring success can be traced back well over 50-years ago to the post-WWII landscape of southern California. It all started in 1946, when Ted's father, Fletcher Jones Sr., met a man on a golf course who would ultimately change his destiny.

The man was a successful entrepreneur. Specifically, he was meeting great success in the then burgeoning auto industry. Dually impressed and interested, Fletcher Jones Sr. decided to change paths. Instead of completing law school and becoming a lawyer, he opted instead to test the waters of the automotive retail space.

After pulling together twelve-hundred dollars, a near fortune in those days, Fletcher Jones Sr. opened the doors to a humble used car lot in downtown Los Angeles. It's hard to believe given today's M.S.R.P.s; but, he sold his first used car for just seventy dollars. Shortly thereafter, Jones Sr. opened a new car dealership and earned his first taste of success, selling Chrysler and Plymouth models.

To spread the word quickly, Jones Sr. advertised his stores on TV and in the local newspapers. Assuming the role of the spokesperson, he extolled the benefits of buying cars from his dealerships in a personable, honest manner. The success of such a formula speaks for itself and continues to live at the core of Ted's advertising methodologies today.

Over the next 15 years, Fletcher Jones Sr. grew his operations to include Chevrolet and GM-Brand cars and opened an array of new dealerships located throughout southern California, Phoenix and Las Vegas. By opening in markets that were experiencing unprecedented growth, he quickly earned a reputation as a "rising star" in the automotive market.

In the mid-1960's, Fletcher Jones Sr. offered his son, Ted (or Fletcher Jones Jr.) his first job in the business. Ted started out working a variety of your "less glamorous" entry-level positions, including those in maintenance (i.e., sweeping the facilities' floors) and the dealerships' parts departments. It didn't take long before he advanced into sales and management positions.

With his father's guidance, Ted eventually opened up his own new car dealership. His decision to carry new, fuel-efficient Mazda vehicles proved to be a fortuitous one, especially in light of the then-imminent oil crisis and resultant shift in consumer preferences.

Not one to place too much emphasis on one brand, Ted began opening additional dealerships that offered both domestic and import brands and soon operated a stable of eight locations from southern California to Las Vegas. He ran them jointly with his father until 1994, who was then 76 years old.

By the early '90's Ted had a clear vision of the direction he wanted to take his and his father's business venture; and, in 1991, he purchased a bankrupt luxury auto dealership in the affluent community of Newport Beach, setting his plan in motion to create one of the  largest Mercedes-Benz centers in America. After completing construction and fine-tuning the operation to run like a Swiss watch, he applied the same time-tested and winning business principles to the additional dealerships that make up the Fletcher Jones' fine family  of dealerships today.
